South Padre Island (or SPI) is popularly called “The Two Nation Vacation” because this island in the tropical part of Texas is 30 minute away from Cancun, Mexico, which is considered as the Spring Break Capital.
It is rated as one of the top 10 beaches in the world and getting around there can be a breeze once you know these great tips.
No departure taxes – Not only you can enjoy two destinations during your Spring Break, you do not have to pay expensive departure taxes like you will find in Jamaica, Cancun, Acapulco, and Nassau.
Alcohol is a-OK – Consumption of alcohol is completely legal on the beach, even putting a keg! Students can bring their own beer and save money, avoiding that steep $8 per drink to the hotel beach bar.
Student-friendly clubs – There are huge clubs and bars in SPI that cater to students. You can check out Tequila Frogs, Louie’s Back Yard, and Chaos.
Cool events – There are a lot of corporate-sponsored events in SPI during the day where a lot of fellow Spring Breakers gather. These events are to be found behind large hotels.
Drinking age, clubbing age – Drinking age in SPI is 21, but you can enter the island’s coolest bars and clubs if you are at least 18. The bars are very strict on IDs, so if you are under 21 and want to be legal, simply head to Mexico.
Prepare yourself – Bring between $200-$300 spending money. Remember to protect yourself with SPF 15 sunblock during the day. And don’t forget to bring condoms.
