Best time to visit Cairo

The temperature in Cairo can be extremely warm – hot even, especially if you are used to cold weather. The best time to visit Cairo is from November to March when the temperature is a lot cooler, ranging from (low temperatures) 9 – 23 (high temperatures) C.

Sites To See

Cairo is one of those places where old meets new. It’s a busy cosmopolitan city with night spots, universities, etc. but also has a lot of historic, even ancient sites that are really worth seeing.

The Egyptian Museum

Also known as the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, it holds the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world, especially with the return of Ancient Egyptian Artifacts spearheaded by Dr. Dr. Zahi Hawass, the museum now holds 136,000 items on display, not including the hundreds of thousands more artifacts in its storeroom.

Khan El-Khalili

Khan El-Khalili is an ancient shopping area that goes back to 1382 when Emir Djaharks el-Khalili built a big caravanserai or a kind of traders’ hotel there. A caravanserai is supposed to be the focus of economic activity in an area so the suq or bazaar/market sprang up because of that. To get to the Khan El-Khalili, ask for the narrow street of Sikka Khan el-Khalili and Badestan.

Old (Coptic) Cairo

Coptic Cairo or Masr al-Qadima is home of the Coptic Museum, Babylon Fortress, Hanging Church and the Greek Church of St. George as well as other Coptic Churches. It is also where the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Amr ibn al-‘As Mosque. It is the oldest part of Cairo and has been inhabited for more the 2000 years. It is the original site of Babylon.

City of the Dead

The City of Dead is a vast necropolis located East of Cairo, and though it is indeed a huge burial site, millions of Cairenes call it home. The City of the Dead or Qarafa is not accessible by bus or taxi. The only way to go this place is via a guided tour. No one should wander there without someone who is familiar with the place. The city’s poor make the ancient tombs their home.

Cairo Tower

The Cairo tower is free-standing TV tower located in the Zamalek district on Gezira Island in the Nile River. It is 187 meters tall, making it (43 meters) higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza (located just about 15 km to the southwest.
