Goslar Germany: A Sleepy Provincial Town

Goslar, GermanyThe prominent website TripAdvisor.com released its Top Ten World Destinations for 2009 and it included a quiet medieval town in Germany’s Lower Saxony Region called Goslar. Situated 150 miles west of capital Berlin, the Old Town of Goslar and nearby Mines of Rammelsberg are listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Goslar is located at the foot of Harz Mountains, with a rich history stretching from the Neolithic era through the settlement of the Saxon people (who became descendants of the Dutch, Belgians, and English peoples) up until the reunification of Germany. It was founded by Emperor Henry I in the 10th Century after silver was discovered in the mountain of Rammelberg. It became an Imperial City where the emperor spend their summer vacations.

The old charm of Goslar can still be seen in modern times, as travelers are still in awe with its magnificent Medieval-styled gates and ramparts, as well as the Imperial Palace, its Romanesque churches, and half-timbered guild houses. The Mines of Rammelsberg has stopped its operations in 1988 after silver and other precious metals have been exhausted from the mines. It was then converted into a museum to preserve its history and legacy.

But beyond the traditional sightseeing, Goslar has a lot of activities to offer for travelers as well as the locals. One can go skiing down the beautiful mountain resorts surrounding Goslar, such as Hahnenklee-Bockswiese, Torfhaus, and Wurmberg. Meanwhile, an artificial water ski lake is located at Salzgitter, perfect for sailing and windsurfing.

Tourists can also take wild-water rafting on the Oker River wherein, on the right conditions, can take you on a thrilling trips down its turbulent currents. And as the sun falls down, one can take a nightcap along the town’s comfy bars.
