Lord Howe Island holds the distinction of being the most beautiful island in the Pacific. Less than two hours by plane from Sydney or Brisbane, it is an island of pristine sand beaches, crystal clear water, and the southernmost coral reef in the world. It also boasts natural forests that are home to a variety of animals, some of them listed as endangered species. Here are some of the many activities you must do in the island.
Surfing, swimming, and scuba diving
The pace in Lord Howe Island is relaxed but there are many adventures and activities to choose from. Untouched beaches with immaculate golden sands entice swimmers, sybarites, and surfers. You can also snorkel among colorful turtles, fish, and other tropical and sub-tropical marine animals. The water is so clear and clean, it is as if you are swimming in a giant aquarium.
Walking and biking
Lord Howe Island is also perfect for fitness enthusiasts. You can walk around the island, which is about 11 kilometers long and about 2.5 kilometers wide. You can rent a bicycle and go around the island. Cars and motorcycles can also be rented, but the number of rental units is limited.
For adventurers, Lord Howe Island offers bushwalks and strenuous hikes. It also offers its visitors to climb Mt Gower (875 meters) and Mt Lidgbird (777 meters high) located in the southern tip of the island. It will only take you half a day to climb each mountain. To ease your tired muscles, you can choose from a number of spa treatments.
Considering its size, Lord Howe Island can only offer 400 tourist beds overnight at any one time. If you are staying one or more nights here, you have to confirm your accommodation first before purchasing a plane ticket. A typical holiday package includes airfares, airport transfers, accommodation, and may include meals.
Because of its stunning natural beauty and magnificent collection of rare flora and fauna, Lord Howe Island was included as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites in 1982.
